I embarked on a journey to Venice for two months, embracing every moment of luxury and beauty this iconic city offers. Amid the Venetian allure, I indulged in a brief yet exquisite retreat at the Hotel Excelsior Venice Lido Resort. Located on Lido di Venezia, this eleven-kilometer-long island is a sanctuary of serenity with golden beaches facing the Adriatic Sea on one side and the Venice Lagoon on the other. Lido is not only known for its beachside charm but also for hosting the prestigious Venice Film Festival each year. This oasis, just a short boat ride from the chaos of Venice, offers the perfect balance between city excitement and tranquil luxury.
Arriving at Hotel Excelsior was like stepping onto a movie set, and I mean that literally. This hotel has a history deeply intertwined with the Venice Film Festival, which started on its very terrace in 1932. Over the years, countless celebrities have graced this iconic dock, posing for the cameras as they arrived in style. Naturally, I recreated my own red carpet moment, feeling every bit the film star.
Stepping into this grand hotel, which opened in 1908 and designed by Venetian architect Giovanni Sardi, is like walking into a masterpiece. It was hard to believe that such a majestic structure was built in just 17 months. With its Moorish architecture, it boasts an aura of timelessness, as if the building itself has witnessed centuries of Italian splendor.
I hopped on the hotel’s complimentary shuttle boat from St. Mark’s Square. The boat is a sleek vision, designed in the 1950s and inspired by the classic Riva boats that are the epitome of Venetian style. The ride takes around 20 to 25 minutes, during which I soaked in the breathtaking views of Venice’s waterways. Upon arrival, the sense of exclusivity was immediate. For those wondering, only small personal belongings are allowed on the shuttle, so if you’re lugging around a mountain of luggage like I tend to, you’ll need to arrange a water taxi or Vaporetto.

This Murano is as old as the hotel itself from 1908.
Every corner of this hotel celebrates Venice’s artistic history. Murano glass lights hang majestically, illuminating hallways and lounges. These aren’t just light fixtures; they’re pieces of art. I was mesmerized by the attention to detail, from the ornate decor to the breathtaking craftsmanship. The entire hotel feels like a tribute to Venice’s grandeur.
For movie buffs, the hotel has hosted scenes from The New Pope series, starring Jude Law, filmed right on the hotel’s private beach. Oh, how I wished for my own Netflix here.
Sala Stucchi Ballroom
If you’re planning an event, the stunning Sala Stucchi ballroom is a must-see. This ballroom, which featured in Once Upon a Time in America, holds an air of old-world charm that made me feel like I had stepped back into a time when glamour was queen.

Swimming Pool & Beach
And don’t even get me started on the pool. Elevated for the ultimate sea view, the pool area is a place where comfort meets class. From the poolside lounges, you can gaze out at the Adriatic while sipping on something cool and bubbly. For those seeking even more luxury, private cabanas can be booked, offering an exclusive retreat with uninterrupted views of both the sea and the stylish pool. I couldn’t help but feel like royalty every moment I spent lounging there, either poolside or in the myriad of outdoor seating areas.
The private beach itself is a dream, offering white cabanas that are the epitome of luxury. Lounging by the sea in one of these cabanas, with the sound of waves and the view of the sparkling Adriatic, was pure bliss.

Junior Suite
The junior suites at Hotel Excelsior have an average size of 45m2. The suite I stayed at came with an optional terrace overlooking the Venetian Lagoon. The dimensions of the Junior Suite both inside and outside are scaled like a much larger unit. The breadth of the open, transparent spaces overlooking the large terrace was very exotic. The natural lighting peering into the room was stunning at sunset.
Inside the hotel, even the bathrooms are a sight to behold. Tiled with historical Italian ceramics, and adorned with Murano glass lights, the bathroom felt like a luxurious art exhibit. Taking in the sea view from the bathroom window? Now that’s what I call luxury! Every element of the bathroom design is a nod to Italy’s rich heritage of craftsmanship and artistry, making even the simplest tasks feel indulgent.
Below is another room to give you an idea of the continuous change of interior design that was formed from the onset. The hotel’s rooms DNA, have never been altered or changed. Adding another nostalgic charm here at Hotel Excelsior.
The history of the Venice Film Festival is ever-present within the walls of the Excelsior. As I wandered the hotel, I couldn’t help but be captivated by the photographs of legendary film stars who once stayed here. An exclusive exhibition showcases original photos from La Biennale’s archives, adding a touch of Hollywood glamour to the experience. For a moment, I could almost imagine brushing shoulders with the likes of Sophia Loren or Robert De Niro.
But don’t let the grandeur fool you. Despite its size, the Hotel Excelsior feels like home. The staff is attentive yet unobtrusive, ensuring that your stay is both luxurious and comfortable. They’ve managed to combine the hotel’s rich history with modern touches, creating a space where old-world charm meets contemporary luxury.
After days of lounging by the pool, indulging in fine Italian food, and exploring the beautiful grounds of the hotel, I can confidently say that the Hotel Excelsior is a dream. It offers a perfect escape, where every corner is steeped in luxury and elegance. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a glamorous retreat, or a family vacation, this hotel ticks all the boxes. And don’t forget—Venice is just a short boat ride away, offering yet another world to explore.

Bathroom With A View
The hotel’s terrace is a hidden gem, offering unparalleled views of Venice and the Lido beach. It’s one of the few places in Venice where you get such expansive outdoor space. I found myself returning to this terrace time and time again, whether to sip on a morning espresso or an evening glass of prosecco. Watching the sunrise at 5:45 am from this terrace was a romantic experience I’ll never forget.
Â
Breakfast
Breakfast at Hotel Excelsior was nothing short of a decadent affair. Fresh Italian pastries, seasonal fruits, and, of course, prosecco—it’s Italy, after all! My daughter adored the waffles, which were served with the freshest fruits of the season. For me, it was the Italian cakes paired with a perfect cappuccino, enjoyed while gazing out at the sea. The hotel’s buffet-style service allows you to select your food, and the staff will bring it to your table. It’s the small touches like these that make staying here feel like a truly personalized experience.

Conclusion
Hotel Excelsior is not just a place to stay. It’s an experience, a moment in time where luxury, history, and modern comforts converge. And for someone like me, who loves all things opulent, this is the Venice dream come true.
